My Favorite Star

I shift my head up

Sharpen my eyesight

Search through the sprawling night sky

Speckled with stars

Until I get to one

My favorite one,

Vega

A beautiful summer star situated in a sequestered spot glimmering ever so slightly

With a salacious story to share

She cries for she longs for her one true love,

Altair

Who sits across the galaxy surrounded by a staggering number of stars

2 billion to be exact

100,000 light years separating them apart

100 billion planets he’d have to pass

But far below them both

Vega’s tears rain and sing down on the magpies of earth

And then on the seventh day of the seventh month every year

The magpies rise

Flying up

Their wings form a bridge

A galaxy spanning path

Allowing Vega and Altair to meet

For one night, and only that one night

Some see this as a sad tale, I see it as a sanguine story

A story of hope…

That our tears matter
